GENERAL QUESTIONS

This section is designed to provide clear, helpful answers to the questions we hear most often. Whether you're just getting started or you're looking for more specific details, our goal is to make sure you find the information you need quickly and easily.

We’re continually updating this page to reflect the most accurate and up-to-date content, so if you don’t see the answer you're looking for just yet, rest assured — it’s on the way. In the meantime, feel free to reach out to our support team for personalized help at islandbksobx@yahoo.com

Do you sell books online?

Not just yet — but we’re getting there! We’ll soon be adding a link to our Bookshop.org page where you’ll be able to browse and order books online while still supporting Island Bookstore. It’s a win-win: the convenience of online shopping with the impact of buying local.

2

Do you sell signed books?

Yes, we do! We occasionally receive signed copies directly from publishers, and during the summer months, we host local author signings at our stores. Every now and then you might just stumble upon a signed gem on our shelves — it's one of our favorite surprises!

3

Do you sell used books?

At this time, we don’t carry used books. Our focus is on offering a curated selection of new titles, including new releases, indie favorites, and regional reads.

4

Do you have a book club?

We're currently in the process of developing one and are really excited about it! If you’re part of a local book club or would like to see yours featured, we’d love to hear from you. Feel free to get in touch and help us build a community of readers together.

5

Do your gift cards expire?

Not at all! Our gift cards never expire, so you can take your time finding the perfect read or save it for your next Outer Banks visit.

6

Are you hiring?

We’re not hiring at the moment, but we’re always happy to accept applications. We keep them on file and review them whenever a new opportunity opens up — so if you’re passionate about books and community, feel free to drop one off!

7

Do you offer any discounts?

Yes, we do! Every week, we offer 20% off our hardcover Indie Bestsellers — a great way to discover what readers across the country are loving. We also have a special “Last Chance” library cart with rotating hardcovers at 30% off. It’s worth checking often — you never know what treasures you’ll find.

8

What services do you provide for local schools and educators?

We’re proud to support our local educators! Teachers and school librarians receive 20% off with valid ID. We’re also happy to help with special orders, bulk classroom requests, or building up your school library. Just give us a call or send us an email — we’re here to help.

AURTHORS AND EVENTS

This section answers common questions about our authors, their work, and upcoming events. Whether you're curious about book signings, speaking engagements, or how to connect with us as an author, you'll find helpful details here. We're updating this area regularly, so check back for the latest information.

"I'm an author, would you like to carry my book?"

Island Bookstore values and supports local and independently published authors. In fact, we have an independently published author on staff!

If you would like for us to review your book for inclusion in our collection, please provide ONE review copy by mail or by leaving it in one of our three locations with this form attached. (Note: We receive hundreds of books to review every year and our summer months are BUSY. Turn around time for our review may be several weeks.) We only stock titles that can be purchased from Ingram or a publisher. If you are self published, we only stock books from local authors.

2

"I'm an author, would you like to host a book signing event for me?"

We love connecting with authors, especially those with ties to the local community! If you’re interested in doing a signing or event with us, please send your info via email, phone, or our contact page. We’d love to learn more about your work and see if we’re a good fit.

3

"I'm organizing an event and would love to have books sold there, would you be interested in doing that?"

Possibly! We consider these requests on a case-by-case basis, and usually only after store hours. If your event aligns with our schedule and mission, we’d be happy to talk more. Reach out and tell us a bit about what you’re planning.

4

Do I need to RSVP to events?

RSVPs aren’t required, but they’re always appreciated! They help us make sure we have enough space, seats, and (most importantly) books!

5

When should I arrive for an event?

Unless otherwise noted, you’re welcome to arrive anytime during the listed event hours. For readings or talks, showing up 5–10 minutes early is a good idea to find a comfy spot and settle in.
